Marie Antoinette by Sofia Copolla

Although not my favorite film, "Marie Antoinette", for a variety of compelling reasons, is an enjoyable film that humanizes a historical figure that was seen as equal with god.. Firstly, the film's visual aesthetics are colorfully captivating. Directed by Sofia Coppola, the movie brilliantly captures the grandeur and extravagance of 18th-century French court life. From the lavish costumes to the intricate set designs, every scene is a visually appealing. Kirsten Dunst's portrayal of Marie Antoinette is both endearing and relatable, making it easy to connect with the young queen as she navigates the challenges of her new life in the French court.

What truly sets this film apart for me is its soundtrack. It blends modern and period-appropriate music, creating a unique auditory experience. For example, the use of the song, "I Want Candy" by Bow WoW Wow modernizes 18th Century Marie Antoinette and makes her more relatable. The unconventional use of 1980s and early 2000s pop songs in a historical context adds a layer of charm and familiarity to the narrative. The juxtaposition of contemporary music with the period visuals adds a touch of bringing a sense of fun and relatability to the story. The soundtrack not only complements the film's overall ambiance but also amplifies the emotional impact of key moments.

Lastly, the film provides a refreshing and relatable perspective on a historical figure often depicted as distant and unrelatable. The film humanizes Marie Antoinette, portraying her as a young woman thrown into a world of high class, protocol, and richness in which she struggles to find her place. This portrayal, by Kirsten Dunst, allows the audience to empathize with her journey and serves as a reminder that even those living in luxury were not exempt from life's challenges. These aspects, combined with the film's visual color and modern soundtrack, render "Marie Antoinette" a fun and enjoyable film. But I would not go far to say its a fantastic film filled with deep meaning. At the end of the day, it brings further humanizes a historical figure who thought of herself as above the common folk.
